Geographic Information System (GIS)
The Geographic Information Service (GIS) Department creates and maintains the county’s spatial (geographical) data and application specific tools necessary to utilize that data.
We assist the other county departments, the 15 incorporated Linn County cities and the public by keeping the county’s data and database components updated and available for use public use.
The GIS Department issues county addresses and answers public, private sector and citizen questions pertaining to them. The GIS Department maintains — or helps maintain — more than 100 data sets. These include address location points, roads, tax lots and zoning information.
We work closely with the Information Technology Department to provide the hardware and software that make this data readily accessible through a number of user friendly, department specific applications. These applications include field use tools and forms that allow departments or offices to gather information in the field digitally. This allows for both instant analysis in the field and more detailed analysis in the office without having to re-enter data from field notes. We supply offices and departments with customized, easy to use hard copy maps.
The GIS Department also compiles data and provides specialized analysis for a wide range of county, city and public projects.
